Children’s Acquisition of EFL through the exposure to English media

This research aimed to evaluate the effect that different kinds of English-speaking media (music, movies, etc.) could have on children's language acquisition, and whether or not it played an actual rule in helping the children acquire a second language. Researches show that learning a language before the age of ten years, allows the children to speak as fluently as a native speaker of the language because at this time the brain retains its plasticity, and according to Doctor Joshua Hartshorne, an assistant professor of psychology at Boston College, 'If you want to have native-like knowledge of English grammar you should start by about 10 years old.' This and most research emphasize the fact that 'the earlier the better’when it comes to language, and relate it to the critical period. There isn't enough research to explore the actual effectiveness of exposing young children to English speaking media, therefore this research was conducted in order to get a better understanding of it. A case
study was conducted, in which mixed methods were used in order to obtain the needed data. The researcher used a questionnaire to gather information from parents of children interview with a teacher who uses this method with young children and whom this method was applied to, the researcher also conducted a semi-structured interview with a teacher who uses this method with young children and notices the actual effect of it on them and their language performance. Results of both the questionnaire and the interview indicated that exposure to English speaking media plays an important role in language acquisition, and children’s performance. The results agree with most of the past theories and hypothesis about language acquisition.
